GA4 for small business: the five reports that matter

GA4 was built for large companies with analysts, which is why small business owners open it, feel lost, and close it again. The good news is that a small site needs a small slice of it. Five reports and one correct setup step answer almost every question an owner actually has.

01

Fix the setup before reading anything

GA4 counts visits by default and nothing else. Until you tell it what a result is, every report describes movement rather than business outcomes.

Mark your real outcomes as key events: contact form submissions, clicks on your phone number, clicks on your email address, and completed purchases.

Phone clicks matter more than most owners expect, because a large share of service enquiries never touch a form. If you do not track them, your best channel can look like your worst.

Verify the setup by submitting your own form and checking that the event appears. Broken tracking looks identical to no demand, and owners regularly cut good channels because of it.

02

The five reports worth using

Almost every practical decision comes from these five views.

  • Traffic acquisition: which channels bring visitors, and more importantly which bring key events.
  • Landing pages: where sessions start, so you know which page carries the first impression.
  • Pages and screens: what people actually read once they are in.
  • Key events: how many enquiries or sales happened, and from where.
  • Tech and device: how much of your traffic is mobile, which usually decides where to spend effort.

Everything else in GA4 is refinement. If these five are unclear, more reports will not help.

03

Reading channels honestly

Always look at channels by key events, not by sessions. A channel that sends a thousand visitors and no enquiries is not a good channel, however impressive the chart looks.

Direct traffic is the most misread group. It mixes people typing your address, clicks from apps and messages, and untagged campaigns, so treat it as partially unknown rather than as brand loyalty.

If you run ads, tag campaign links properly. Without tags the traffic falls into direct or referral and you lose the ability to judge whether the spend worked.

Compare month against month rather than watching daily numbers. Small sites have small numbers, and small numbers are noisy by nature.

04

Finding the page that costs you money

The most valuable pattern in a small account is a landing page with steady traffic and almost no key events. People arrive and leave without acting.

That is usually a mismatch between what the visitor expected and what the page offers, or simply a page with no clear next step on it.

Check the same page on mobile before concluding anything. A form that works on desktop and breaks on a phone is a common and invisible cause of zero enquiries.

Fixing one high traffic page with a weak call to action typically returns more than adding new pages, because the audience is already there.

05

What to ignore

Realtime is satisfying and almost never actionable. It shows a moment, not a direction.

Average engagement time is easy to misread, because a long time on a contact page usually means confusion rather than interest.

Demographic detail on low traffic sites rests on too little data to justify moving budget.

Consistency beats depth. Fifteen minutes a month across five reports will improve decisions more than an occasional afternoon lost in the interface.

FAQ

Do I need GA4 if I already use Search Console?+

They answer different questions. Search Console shows what happens in Google search before the click: queries, impressions and indexing. GA4 shows what happens after the visitor arrives, including which channel brought them and whether they enquired. A small business that only wants organic search visibility can start with Search Console, but measuring enquiries by channel requires an analytics tool.

Is GA4 allowed under GDPR in the EU?+

GA4 is widely used in the EU, but it requires a working consent setup: analytics scripts must not run before the visitor consents, and your privacy information must explain what is collected. A cookie banner that only displays a message while scripts already load is not compliant. If consent handling is a concern, privacy focused analytics tools are a common alternative.

Why does GA4 show zero conversions when I am getting enquiries?+

In almost every case the key events were never configured or were configured incorrectly. GA4 does not know what counts as a result in your business, so form submissions, phone number clicks and email clicks each have to be set up as events. After setup, test it yourself by submitting a form and confirming the event appears in the reports.
