Montonio integration: a practical guide for Estonian e-shops

·7 min read

If you run an online store in Estonia, your customers expect to pay through their bank. Montonio is the most common way to enable that. Here's what to know before integrating it.

01

What Montonio actually is

Montonio is an Estonian payment infrastructure company. For an e-shop, its key feature is bank-link payments: the customer picks their bank at checkout, gets redirected, confirms, and comes back.

It covers the banks Estonian customers actually use: Swedbank, SEB, LHV, Coop Pank, and others across the Baltics. It also offers card payments and pay-later options.

For an Estonian store, Montonio bank links are close to mandatory - a large share of buyers will not complete a purchase without their bank as an option.

02

Montonio vs Maksekeskus vs Stripe

Montonio - strongest for Baltic bank links, clean modern API, good developer experience.

Maksekeskus - another established Estonian provider, also offers bank links and is strong on card payments.

Stripe - the global standard for card payments, excellent API, but does not provide Estonian bank links.

Common setup: Montonio for bank links plus Stripe or Maksekeskus for card payments. Don't think of it as either/or.

03

What to prepare before integration

A registered Estonian company - Montonio works with legal entities, not anonymous individuals.

A business bank account to receive settlements.

Your store platform decided. Montonio has a ready WooCommerce plugin; for custom Next.js or headless stores you integrate via their API.

Clarity on your refund flow - test refunds are part of a proper integration, not an afterthought.

04

Integration on different platforms

WooCommerce - official Montonio plugin. Install, enter API keys, configure. The fastest path.

Shopify - Montonio availability depends on the current Shopify payments setup; check before committing.

Custom / headless (Next.js, Saleor, Medusa) - integrate through the Montonio API. More work, full control, the payment step lives in your own checkout.

05

Testing before launch

Always test the full cycle in Montonio's test environment before going live: successful payment, cancelled payment, failed payment, and refund.

Check that order status updates correctly in your store for each outcome, and that confirmation emails fire. A payment that succeeds but leaves the order stuck is a real and common bug.

FAQ

Can a non-Estonian company use Montonio?+

Montonio works with companies registered in its supported markets. An Estonian OÜ - including one owned by an e-resident - qualifies. A company with no Baltic registration generally does not.

How long does Montonio integration take?+

On WooCommerce with the official plugin, a basic setup is a day. On a custom or headless store, budget a few days including thorough testing of all payment outcomes.

Do I still need Stripe if I have Montonio?+

If any of your customers want to pay by card - especially international customers - yes. Montonio plus a card processor is the typical complete setup.
