How to choose a web agency as an e-resident
As an e-resident you run an Estonian company from abroad, and you will likely never meet your web agency in person. That makes choosing the right one a remote-trust problem. Here is how to do it well.
Check that they work async
You are probably in a different timezone. The agency must be comfortable working asynchronously: clear written updates, a shared progress space, calls scheduled in your time when needed.
Ask directly how they handle remote projects. If their answer assumes in-person meetings, you will spend the whole project chasing them.
Demand a contract and IP transfer
A contract protects both sides. It should state scope, price, timeline and what happens if the project slips.
Most important is IP ownership. After handover the domain, the code and all access must belong to you. Some agencies keep these so you cannot leave. Ask directly: after the work, do I get full ownership and access. A no is a dealbreaker.
Verify they understand Estonian compliance
An Estonian company website has obligations: showing the legal entity name and registration code, handling VAT display correctly, GDPR-compliant data handling.
An agency that has worked with e-residency companies will know this. One that hasn't may ship a site that looks fine but is not compliant. Ask for examples of Estonian OÜ sites they have built.
Red flags
- They cannot show any finished work
- They refuse to name even a price range
- Communication is already slow during the sales stage
- They guarantee a #1 Google ranking by a fixed date
- They want to host everything and keep the code
If the sales stage feels difficult, the project will be worse.
FAQ
Should the agency be in Estonia?+
Not necessarily. What matters is that they understand Estonian compliance and can work in your timezone. Many good agencies serving e-residents are themselves remote.
How do I pay an agency abroad safely?+
Use a contract with staged payments tied to milestones. Pay a deposit, then payments as stages are delivered, never the full amount upfront.
What if I need changes after launch?+
Agree on this before signing. A good agency offers a support plan or hands over full access so you can hire anyone later. Avoid lock-in.
