What is SEO

In short

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work that helps your site rank higher in Google search results and thereby bring in more visitors.

SEO has two sides. Technical SEO ensures Google can read and index the site: speed, structure, markup. Content SEO means content that answers what people search for.

SEO is not a one-time task. It is an ongoing process whose results come over time.

Why SEO matters

People search Google for services with a clear intent to buy. If your site is not there, they find a competitor. SEO brings organic traffic that does not stop when you stop paying.

How Google finds and ranks pages

Google's crawler follows links from page to page and reads what it finds. It then decides whether a page is valuable enough to add to the index. Only an indexed page can appear in search results.

When ranking, Google weighs how well a page answers the query, how trustworthy the site is as a whole and how comfortable it is to use. Links from other websites are one of the signals of trust.

Example: a plumbing company in Tallinn

The company has one Services page listing ten kinds of work. But people search for a specific job, such as boiler installation in Tallinn, and in Estonia they do it in Estonian and in Russian. A general list answers that query poorly, so Google shows a competitor with a dedicated boiler installation page covering prices, the steps of the job and the service area.

Because the same service is searched for in two or three languages, each language needs its own properly written page, not a machine translation. For a local business a Google Business Profile helps as well, since it puts the company into map results.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

SEO is not stuffing keywords into text, and it is not a one-off setup after which the site can be forgotten.

  • All services share one page, so no query gets a precise answer.
  • Every page has the same title and description, or none at all.
  • A new site launches without redirecting old addresses and the rankings earned so far disappear.
  • Results are expected in a couple of weeks. A new site usually needs months before rankings settle.

How to check where your site stands

Type site:yourcompany.ee into Google to see which pages are indexed. Google Search Console, which is free, gives the full picture: which queries bring you up, what position each page holds and which pages were left out of the index.

If a page gets many impressions but few clicks, rewrite its title and description. If it is stuck on the second page of results, the content needs more depth.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

Technical fixes can show an effect within weeks, while building content and trust usually takes several months. The pace depends on competition, the age of the site and how consistently the work is done.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

With Google Ads you pay for every click and traffic stops when the budget does. With SEO you pay for the work and the clicks are free. Ads deliver at once, SEO grows more slowly but lasts longer. Many companies use both.

Can I do SEO myself?

Partly. A business owner can write thorough service pages, keep the Google Business Profile up to date and ask customers for reviews. The technical side, such as speed, structure and redirects, usually needs a specialist.
